   Colonel Charles Young Scholarship 2018

Congratulations to the 2017 High School and Continuing Education level scholarship awardees!  Please CLICK HERE to view our 2017 scholarship recipients. The scholarships were awarded based on GPA, Extracurricular Activities and a graded  essay assignment.

The 2018 Colonel Charles Young Memorial Scholarship contest is now underway.  The topic for this year is:

"The 15th Amendment of 1870 granted African American men the right to vote!  The Voting Rights Act of 1965 removed barrier allowing the majority of African Americans in the South to vote. The 19th Amendment of 1920 granted American women the right to vote.

According to the Center for American Women and Politics, woman ages 18-24 only had a 46% participation rate in 2016 and woman participation overall dropped  from 63.7% in 2012 to 63.3% in the 2016 Presidential Election. African American’s voter participation fell, according to the US Census Bureau, to 59.6 in 2016 from 66.6% in 2012. The right to vote was a struggle for both groups to earn. In a 800 to 1200 word paper please:

(1) Offer some historical accounts on the struggle for Women and African Americans to earn the right to vote.

(2) Identify what you see as the primary causes for the recent drop by both groups and what recommendations can you offer to help prevent future voter participation decline?"

Scholarship application must be submitted no later than April 16th, 2018.  Guidelines for preparing the essay along with the application can be found within the 2018 Charles Young Memorial Scholarship packet.  Scholarship contestants should click here to download the application and related materials:  CCYMS SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION 2018 (PDF).
