Head Bowie State Football Coach Damon Wilson Has History-Making Season

 | Published on 12/7/2015

Bowie, MD (December 7, 2015) – Lambda Gamma Gamma (LGG) chapter’s Coach Damon Wilson, head football coach of the Bowie State Bulldogs, was selected CIAA Coach of the Week two times during the 2015 football season. At the team level, it was also impressive that the Bulldogs’ 57-3 win over Lincoln brought Bowie State into the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II Coaches’ Top 25 Pool for just the first time since the program’s inception.

Coach Wilson’s meteoric rise this season is nothing less than remarkable given all the adversity he and his team faced. The biggest loss, arguably, was in his starting roster. The Bulldogs lost their starting quarterback, back-up quarterback, 3 starting linebackers, 2 starting safeties and numerous other players on the offensive and defensive lines. Commenting on the losses due to injuries, Coach Wilson stated that "We have been operating on a next man up mentality and we will figure it out. We have had to play freshman that we didn't plan on playing, but it's a ‘trial by fire’ thing for the guys.”  He went on to say that “It tests the whole team and as a result the team makes up and covers each other. They really drive each other. Hats off to the guys. They’re some of the most talented guys I have coached.”

Despite the season-ending loss against Assumption in the NCAA Super Region One quarterfinals, Coach Wilson’s accomplishments will go down in the CIAA record books for years to come. Head Coach Damon Wilson has resurrected a once written off program, with perseverance and dedication and he eagerly anticipates another record-breaking season in 2016.
